Dr. Abdulbaset Buhmaidah

Abdelbaset Buhmeida - Ph.D

Scientific Profile:

Dr Buhmaidah was born in April 13, 1966 in Benghazi, Libya and worked at the University of Turku since 1997, when he started pursuing studies for his doctoral thesis in the research group of Prof. Yrjö Collan, at the Department of Pathology. The research of his PhD thesis was focused on the use of fine needle biopsies from prostate cancer and on methods applying static computerized DNA cytometry and morphometry in prostate cancer prognosis and diagnosis.

He successfully defended his thesis in 2002. During these studies, he became acquainted with the modern biomedical cancer research, and also gained experience as an active lecturer in the educational program. Following the completion of his thesis, he continued cancer research as a post-doctoral fellow in a multi-disciplinary research team at the Department of Oncology and Radiotherapy, including senior researchers from the Department of Pathology and Department of Surgery.
During this post-doctoral period, he was involved in guiding junior researchers pursuing studies for their thesis, and gave assistance of exchange students in their research projects. This fruitful period has resulted in a growing series of original publications continuing the research line adopted in his thesis, applying these methods mainly in analysis of solid tumours. At the end of 2009, just after joining the CEGMR, Dr Buhmaidah has been appointed as a Docent in Experimental Oncology (Associate Professor) at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Turku. Once I indulged in the CEGMR, I worked hard for the development of CEGMR in the field of biomedical cancer research, which resulted in publication of several scientific papers in international journals, to be then assigned the task of chairing various service units at CEGMR such as Tissue Culture Unit (TCU), Bio-Bank Unit (BBU) and Bio-Imaging Unit (BIU). I was invited as a speaker in various national and international conferences, where e.g. my report on application of DNA cytometry in CRC was selected as one of the topics in Press Release in ESMO Conference Lugano (ECLU), July, 2007.
